Description: Hello on this Tuesday, March 20, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI headline update. The U.S. Justice Department says newly released documents show those eight U.S. attorneys were fired for performance reasons and not politics. The department disclosed 3,000 email messages to Congress last night that it says proves partisanship didn't play a part. But House Judiciary Committee Chairman Democrat John Conyers says the pile of papers won't stop his committee from investigating the matter. The White House is speaking out against an Iraq funding bill pushed by Democrats in Congress. The bill, which calls for troops to withdraw from Iraq by Aug. 31, 2008, also has big domestic spending attached to it. That includes billions of dollars for drought relief and agriculture. The White House has issued a formal veto statement criticizing the bill's excessive and extraneous non-emergency spending. It also says democracy in Iraq would be at grave risk. Lawmakers are scheduled to vote on the $124 billion bill on Thursday. Saddam Hussein's former Vice President was hanged just before dawn today for crimes against humanity. Taha (Tah-hah) Yassin (Yaa-seen) Ramadan was executed for his role in the deaths of 148 Shiites in the 1980s. Ramadan claimed innocence and said his government duties were limited to economic affairs. A nursing home fire in southern Russia today has killed at least 62 people and hospitalized 30 others. The fire broke out early this morning, but a government spokeswoman says it took the fire department almost an hour to arrive because the nearest fire station was more than 30 miles from the village. Laws require a 2-mile proximity for such facilities. The official says staffing and their behavior were also problems. Only four nurses were working at the time and they were unable to find keys to open emergency exits. For more on these stories and all of the day's news, check out upi.com. Thanks for watching! |
