What is with the hate of the soloist. He sounds good. He does crack at times but it didn't sound like straining (I would say lack of adequate warm up or having a cold could make anyone sound like that). Having been there myself, I think it was a good performance, and he still pulled out the feeling and the ending high note. Nice job fellas, I think this one and thriller made your performance.

he does the high parts when it is necessary for him to do so (competition, semester concerts... yadda yadda). You dont know Zach. I do. He won best solo at SoJam, a north carolina a cappella competition last year...don't act like a know it all. You will hear more about Twisted Measure's version of Home... just wait.

Uhm...no he doesn't. Were you listening? It's on the chorus. Check out the other performance they have of this song. At some party or something. Soloist is straining hard...he never ever even attempts the high stuff, ever. It's a freaking high part. Marc Broussard is so insanely phenomenal, you either have to have chords of steel and a gift to sing that high that high, that loud or really know how to use the belt technique.

That said, I thought the performance was very effective even with the straining. I enjoy this one even better than semis, when the soloist's voice was fully there. This performance they "brought it" to the stage. At semis, I felt that to some degree, they left it in the sound check.

As for the high notes, I knew at the time that this soloist has more range than this performance implied -- but there's something to be said for knowing your limitations at the time of a performance. If he knew he was ill on that day, he might have spent some time exploring some other possibilities for the arrangement.

I agree that both versions have merit. I like this one better, but I'm considerably more familiar with it.

VP has a CD coming out in the fall with Home on it as well. They'll both be great.
