Description:

This is a new Dell PowerEdge 1800 (dual 3.2GHz CPU, 3.5GB RAM) booting up a new install of Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10) Desktop install. Pretty damn quick IMHO, even given the CPUs. EDIT: Yes, 3.5GB RAM, not 3.0 like I said in the vid.

thats quick? Mac OS X boots in like, 6 sec. Question, do any of you know how to install Ubuntu on a Dell Optiplex? I downloaded it from the site and put it onto a DVD disc. then tried on a CDRW and nothing worked. it says, "failed to boot" I'm booting from the CD drive too. anyone know? THANKS!

Now server is different. Now I get it. Servers take long, i know that. Got 2 at home. However mine is fast too. Got nothing on it except a CS1.6, a WS_Server all running on XP server ed.

Dude this is a server - it has to cycle through what, at least 3 different BIOSes (Motherboard, 2 SCSI adapters, and whatever else) before it even starts loading the OS. You can't compare a server to a workstation - but the actual bootup was FAST. Where it lagged, I'm pretty sure, was all hardware autodetection. It does that so it doesn't bother you with "FOUND NEW HARDWARE!" bullshit while you're actually trying to work.

OK. fine. If you only count the time the ubuntu logo loads it is still longer then my xp. much longer. also if you just time the bios it is still faster. also if you only time from pressing the button till you can work with the OS (which is the most important timing of course) then your PC is laaaaame. Mostly due to the long ubuntu loading. My philosophy professor uses ubuntu. His laptop loads much faster altho it is old.

You aren't supposed to time all of the BIOS POSTs.

Yo are kidding me right ? OVER 60 seconds from the moment of pushing the little button ? My 3 year old laptop does it in 30 seconds and the new PC I got similar to the one that you have does 15 seconds on windows XP and bios. Don't make a fool outta yourself.
